Questions merchants actually ask

Including the ones whose answers cost us sales. If yours is missing, email us and a person answers.

The product

Does Backstop submit evidence for me?

No, deliberately. You review the exact PDF, add what only you can know, and submit it yourself in Shopify's dispute form. Auto-submitted generic evidence is how winnable cases get lost, and vendors who auto-submit get torched for it in their own reviews.

Will this improve my win rate?

Nobody can promise that, banks decide disputes. What we can say: sending the evidence a reason code actually asks for is documented to matter, one merchant publicly measured 28% to 60% after fixing only that, and Backstop makes it the default instead of the exception.

What if I have no disputes right now?

Then Backstop is a free watchman. The day one lands, and for most stores it eventually does, you find it already triaged with the deadline counted down, instead of finding it in a week-old unread email.

How fast does it notice a new dispute?

The watcher checks every store every 6 hours, around the clock. There is also a check-now button in the app. Deadline emails go out at 7, 3, and 1 days before each evidence deadline.

Which disputes does it cover?

Disputes filed against Shopify Payments, which is where Shopify exposes dispute data to apps. If your store runs a third-party gateway, Backstop will tell you plainly instead of pretending to watch.

Data and access

What does it need access to?

Read-only access to disputes, orders, customers, and fulfillments, the minimum for evidence assembly. No write access to anything, no customer phone numbers, and we never sell data.

Where does my data live and what happens when I leave?

In the United States, encrypted in transit and at rest, backups included. Uninstalling triggers deletion through Shopify's mandatory redaction process. The privacy policy is one page and readable.

Does it work with my fraud prevention tools?

Yes. Prevention tools try to stop bad orders before they happen; Backstop handles the disputes that get through anyway. Different halves of the same problem, no conflict.

Billing

What does it cost, exactly?

Free to install: dispute watch, deadline emails and the queue cost nothing. Pro is $19 per month, flat, after a 14-day free trial, and adds evidence packs and analytics. Unlimited disputes on both. No success fees, no per-dispute fees, no per-alert fees, never a percentage of recovered money. The pricing page spells out each fee we refuse and why.

How do I cancel?

One click in the app's Settings, effective immediately, no fee, no retention screens. Uninstalling the app also ends billing on its own, Shopify enforces that platform-wide.

When is it available?

Now. Backstop is live on the Shopify App Store at apps.shopify.com/backstop. The free plan starts the moment you install; Pro's 14-day trial starts when you upgrade.
