A chargeback is a deadline with money attached. Here is exactly what Backstop does about it, in order, with screenshots of the shipping product on a test store. Nothing below is a mockup.
Backstop checks your store against Shopify’s dispute API every 6 hours, around the clock, whether or not you ever open the app. New disputes land in a queue ranked by deadline, with the total money at stake on top and a fight or skip call on every row. There is also a check-now button for the impatient.

As an evidence deadline approaches, Backstop emails you at 7 days, 3 days, and 1 day out. One email per stage, never more, with an off switch in Settings. This is the actual email:

#1042: 3 days left to respond, $482.00 at stake
The dispute on #1042 (Fraudulent Transaction, $482.00) needs a response by Thursday, August 27.
If nobody responds by then, Shopify submits a generic packet, and generic packets lose winnable cases. One response only: a submission locks the moment it goes in.
Review the evidenceYou get one email at 7, 3, and 1 days before each deadline. Turn them off any time in Backstop’s Settings.
Opening a dispute shows what its reason code means, the evidence banks expect for it, the industry win rate for merchants who send that evidence, and a straight read, including “skip this one” when fighting costs more than the order.

The full library is public on our reason codes page, the same data that ships in the app.
Order details, fulfillment and tracking, customer history, and your refund policy come together automatically, next to a checklist of what only you can add: a delivery photo, a customer conversation, a signature. The split is explicit, so you always know what is covered and what is missing.

The evidence becomes one PDF you review page by page. When it is right, you submit it yourself in Shopify’s dispute form, with your additions attached.
Backstop never auto-submits, deliberately. Auto-submitted generic evidence is how winnable cases get lost, and it is the single most-complained-about behavior in this category’s reviews. The review gate is the product.
Every dispute, outcome, and reason accumulates into a simple analytics view: what came in, what was won, what the money looked like. Ninety days at a glance, no spreadsheet.
