Reason codes / Duplicate Transaction
The most mechanical code on the list, and the most winnable. One lookup tells you whether you are fighting or refunding, and both answers are quick.
The cardholder told their bank they were charged twice for one order. Sometimes two charges really did land on a single order, and the customer is right. Just as often there are two legitimate orders behind the two charges: a customer reordering, or two people in one household buying separately on the same card.
Duplicate disputes are among the most winnable when you actually shipped two separate orders. Present the two order records, two tracking numbers, and two confirmation emails. If it was a genuine technical double-charge, refund the duplicate immediately, no dispute needed.
This code is arithmetic. Two distinct orders, with two order numbers, two confirmations, and two shipments: the merchant wins. One order with two authorizations: the merchant owed a refund the whole time.
Because it is mechanical, it carries the highest win range of any code Backstop coaches, 60 to 80 percent, whenever the two-order paper trail exists.
This single lookup decides everything. Two charges mapping to two orders is a case. Two charges on one order is a refund you owe.
Two confirmations, two tracking numbers, two packing records. The pair is the whole case, and there is not much else to add.
A genuine double charge is not a dispute to win. It is money you owe, and refunding immediately can resolve the dispute without a fight.
A dispute response locks the moment it is submitted, yours orShopify’s automatic one, with no edits after. Whatever goes in first is your whole case, which is why the first hour matters more than the last day.
Refund the duplicate immediately. Fighting a legitimate duplicate loses, adds the dispute fee, and costs you the customer. Speed is the whole game here.
That is the classic false duplicate, and the two order records decide it: different order numbers, different confirmations, often different items or addresses. Present the pair and this becomes one of the strongest responses in the dispute system.
When a duplicate-code dispute syncs in, Backstop assembles the order record and shows this code's guidance, including the first question that matters: is there a second order? The evidence pack and the deadline countdown are ready either way.
Backstop surfaces the dispute with this code's one deciding question at the top, is there a second order, and assembles the order records into the evidence pack. If the answer is a genuine double charge, the honest guidance says refund, not fight.
